Coney Island Hot Dogs

Here are some recipes I've found over the years. I also found a recipe that purports to be like St. Paul's Original Coney Island Hot Dogs.

  • 1 large onion - finely chopped
  • 32 ozs. tomato puree
  • 2 tsp. prepared yellow mustard (such as French's)
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 T. apple cider vinegar
  • 1-1/2 tsp. chili powder
  • 1 tsp. celery seed
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  1. In a large skillet, VERY lightly brown the ground beef and onions. Break up the ground beef as fine as possible. Drain off fat and set aside. In a large saucepan, combine all the remaining ingredients and cook over medium-low heat for about 10 to 15 minutes. Add the browned ground beef onions. Stir, then simmer for 2 to 2-1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. Or, place the sauce in a crockpot, set on low, for about the same amount of time. Sauce will thicken.

    • My fiance LOVES coney island's, and he thinks this sauce is just about perfect. I added some garlic and a small amount of sugar to the recipe.
    • I felt Sauce was a tad too much chili powder. A famous Michigan Coney restaurant uses these proportions of condiments: 1 lb. hamburgh 80/20 fat ratio. small onion, chopped, 2 tsp. chilipowder(kind that has cumin in it already), 1 tsp. cumin, 2 tsp. Hungarian sweet Paprika, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tsp. white sugar. The mixture is prepared as Joanie suggests. In addition, once the meat is browned, one should “pulse” the meat in a food processor for about 2-3 seconds to break up the “strands” of meat. The white buns should be 7 in. in length and slightly steamed, and the Koegel brand Vienna hotdog is just heated and then topped with the sauce and finally generously topped with chopped sweet onion bits.
