Lemon Bread


I just love this. We used to beg Mom to not put in nuts, and she often would make one loaf with and one without.

Ingredients & Directions

Bread:

  • 1 cup Soft Shortening (Crisco)
  • 2 cups Sugar
    • Cream
  • 4 Eggs, slightly beaten
    • Mix in
  • 3 1/3 cups Sifted Flour
  • 2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
    • Sift together
  • 1 cup Milk
    • Add to mixture alternately with flour
  • 1 cup Chopped Nuts (optional) (Don't do it!!)
  • Grated zest of 2 Lemons
    • Add
  • Bake in 2 15×3 greased pans @ 350F for 1 hour

Topping:

  • Juice of 2 Lemons + lemon juice to make 2/3 cup
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • Pour over loaves as soon as they come out of oven. Refrigerate until cool before removing from pans.
