Penn Ave Chili

Love this. I spice it up quite a bit sometimes.


Preheat: °Yield: 8 servings
Prep: 0:20Wait: 0:00Cook: 1:30

Ingredients & Directions

  • 1 large Onion, chopped
  • 1 Green Pepper, chopped
  • 3/4 lb Hamburger
    • Brown, drain fat
  • 1 lb (2 cups) Diced Tomatoes
  • 1 8 oz can Tomato Sauce
  • 2 lb Red or Kidney Beans including liquid
  • 1.5 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1.5 tsp Salt
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 1/3 cup Ketchup
  • Dash Cayenne
  • Dash Paprika
    • Add, cover, simmer 1.5 hours


  • Original recipe lists some additions for a double recipe:
    • 1/2 can Tomato Paste
    • 1/3 cup Ketchup
    • Oregano, mustard Vinegar
  • Not sure why original recipe called for adding the bean liquid at the end. I just put it in with the beans and it doesn't seem to hurt anything.
  • I've started doubling the recipe but using only 1 lb of ground beef. Not as beefy, but a bit healthier.

Need extra spices used for spicy version.
