Turkey In A Bag

This is how we roasted turkey growing up. It works beautifully.

Instructions

  1. Clean turkey
  2. Tie securely
  3. Rub salad oil on outside of turkey
  4. Put in paper grocery bag - seam side up!
  5. Staple bag closed
  6. Put on trivet in roasting pan
  7. Insert thermometer into thickest part of thigh (or just the breast)
  8. Bake 13-15 minutes/lb at 325
  9. Do not open bag until done!

Notes

  • This works for all sizes of turkey. We regularly did 20-22 lb turkeys in a grocery bag.
  • The bag keeps the juices from evaporating, leading to a lot of drippings for gravy. The gravy will be light tan since it didn't burn on the bottom of the roasting pan. Just use the straight drippings along with a water-flour slurry.
  • I tried it once after brining the turkey, and the skin didn't brown. Would need to figure out how to dry skin for browning after brining.
